Iceberg Calving: Regimes and Transitions

چکیده

Uncertainty about sea-level rise is dominated by uncertainty iceberg calving, mass loss from glaciers or ice sheets fracturing. Review of the rapidly growing calving literature leads to a few overarching hypotheses. Almost all occurs near just downglacier location where flows into an environment more favorable for so rate controlled primarily flow margin rather than Calving can be classified five regimes, which tend persistent, predictable, and insensitive small perturbations in velocity, characteristics, environmental forcing; these regimes studied instrumentally. The statistical physics of iceberg calving and the emergence of universal calving laws

Determining a calving law valid for all glaciological and environmental regimes has proven to be a difficult problem in glaciology. For this reason, most models of the calving process are semiempirical, with little connection to the underlying fracture processes. In this study, I introduce methods rooted in statistical physics to show how calving laws, valid for any glaciological domain, can em...

Cloud regimes as phase transitions

Clouds are repeatedly identified as a leading source of uncertainty in future climate predictions. Of particular importance are stratocumulus clouds, which can appear as either (i) closed cells that reflect solar radiation back to space or (ii) open cells that allow solar radiation to reach the Earth’s surface. Here we show that these clouds regimes – open versus closed cells – fit the paradigm...

Ice sheets. Reverse glacier motion during iceberg calving and the cause of glacial earthquakes.

Nearly half of Greenland's mass loss occurs through iceberg calving, but the physical mechanisms operating during calving are poorly known and in situ observations are sparse. We show that calving at Greenland's Helheim Glacier causes a minutes-long reversal of the glacier's horizontal flow and a downward deflection of its terminus. The reverse motion results from the horizontal force caused by...

Ocean-driven thinning enhances iceberg calving and retreat of Antarctic ice shelves.

Iceberg calving from all Antarctic ice shelves has never been directly measured, despite playing a crucial role in ice sheet mass balance. Rapid changes to iceberg calving naturally arise from the sporadic detachment of large tabular bergs but can also be triggered by climate forcing. Here we provide a direct empirical estimate of mass loss due to iceberg calving and melting from Antarctic ice ...
